What is the MPPRE Travel Document?
The Travel Document is issued by Venezuela's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MPPRE) and allows Venezuelan citizens abroad to return to the country when they don't have a valid passport or can't easily renew it.
The process is handled through the official MPPRE portal: documentodeviaje.mppre.gob.ve
The reference time for approval is approximately 22 days. It can vary depending on the case and current demand.
What the portal asks for:
- Your Venezuelan ID card (the portal loads your data from SAIME) and an email address to create the account. The activation link expires after 24 hours.
- The reason for the request (for example, expired passport) and a photo with a white background, no glasses, in JPG or PNG up to 3 MB.
- Your flight itinerary to Venezuela: airline, flight number, origin, destination, date and exact time from your ticket. If you have connections, each leg.
- Online payment of the official consular fee of US$60.00, by card.
Once approved, you download the PDF from your dashboard, and it is also emailed from documentodeviaje@mppre.gob.ve. You must print two color copies.
Important about validity: the document is only valid for travel to Venezuela on the itinerary you registered, and it expires on arrival in the country. Check the "Valid Until" field before you travel. That's why it's best to buy your ticket only after the document is approved, and to make sure the flight matches the itinerary you registered.

Case 1: Valid Venezuelan passport Easiest
If your Venezuelan passport is valid (not expired), you have the most direct path. You can fly to Venezuela directly with that document.

An expired passport is one of the most common cases. Your options depend on your situation. We review your case before recommending a route.
Options:
- Passport renewal: If you can renew it at the nearest Venezuelan consulate, that's the ideal option. Wait times vary a lot by consulate.
- MPPRE Travel Document: If you can't renew your passport, the Travel Document is the main alternative. It allows returning to Venezuela without a valid passport.
Case 3: Venezuelan ID only (no passport) Requires processing
This is the most common case among Venezuelans abroad. Many emigrated without renewing their passport or lost it. With only a Venezuelan ID card, the MPPRE Travel Document is the main path.

Do I need a visa to enter Venezuela as a resident of the USA?
No. Venezuelan citizens do not need a visa to enter Venezuela. You only need a valid Venezuelan ID document (passport or MPPRE Travel Document).
Can I buy the ticket before getting the MPPRE Travel Document?
We don't recommend it. Airlines verify documentation at check-in and can deny boarding if you don't have the document. Wait until your document is approved before buying the ticket.
Which U.S. cities have flights to Venezuela?
